Preheat oven to 450º lightly grease pie plate with shortening. Place pie crust in pan and cook for 5-10 minutes. Remove and Cool. Reduce oven temperature to 350º.
In mixer blend 1 stick butter and 1 3/4 cups sugar. Continue to blend and add flour and eggs. Last stir in buttermilk and vanilla.
Pour into pie crust. Cover pie in foil. Bake in oven for 1 hour 15 minutes. (check after an hour) When done remove, sprinkle top of pie with light layer of sugar and torch with creme brulee torch until sugar is melted. Let cool completely before serving.
